It’s a good chance that over the last couple of years, you’ve seen Brandon Blackwood while scrolling through your Instagram feed or even while watching one of your favorite artists’ music videos (Saweetie and the City Girls). Known for its signature aesthetic that brings the essence of a downtown NYC girl merged with timeless silhouettes, the designer, and his eponymous brand, has become a staple within the fashion industry for offering luxury goods at an affordable price. Whether you’re in the market for supple leather goods or cozy furs, Blackwood and his team have developed a cult following that has garnered the attention of industry talents like Normani and Doja Cat—and, as of late, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, a.k.a. the CFDA.
Consequently, the brand has gained prominence by creating bags that represent the ideal Brandon Blackwood woman and now has pivoted into designing footwear for that woman to pair with her handbag. One of the first handbags Brandon Blackwood started with was a small tote bag that had the words “End Systemic Racism” etched across the front in bold gold lettering, accompanied by different bright colors and patterns, and the ESR Tote became an instant classic during the summer of 2020. (It also was one of the brand’s first bags sold in Saks.)
For his debut footwear collection, Blackwood unveiled nine silhouettes. A pair of sandals comes with a joint enclosed in a clear heel, and for another sandal, the heel is a taxicab. There are chunky satin mules, mink slides, platform sandals, an angular pair of Chelsea boots, and two variations of thigh-high boots. An option that stands out the most, and have the potential to become another brand favorite, is the Bamboo B boots. Essentially, Blackwood took the signature gold bamboo pattern and fabric from his series of handbags inspired by the gilded earrings synonymous with Black women culture—particularly in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s— and made an earring-shaped heel.
