Remembering Vivienne Westwood: Black Celebrities and Their Westwood Tendencies

Vivienne Westwood, the Tintwistle, England native, passed away on Thursday. The fashion designer was known for making the punk rock aesthetic mainstream in the ‘70s, as well as her activism efforts on climate change, women’s rights, and the establishment. In the fashion world, she established the presence of the previously mentioned punk rock aesthetic and helped it become what it is today through her androgynous styles, slogan t-shirts, and staple plaid print.

When The Sitch staff heard of the passing of Dame Westwood, we thought about how Westwood impacted our angsty teen years. Her clothing always made you think about what “real beauty” meant, and it also made you feel, well, for a lack of a better word, cool. Her draping skills and how she revitalized the corset and flipped it into one of her signature pieces are remarkable too. Let’s just say most fashion lovers can spot her designs while blindfolded. She was a talent that made her waves and designs in fashion appear in more than just magazines. It made you feel. After all, that’s what good fashion does, right?

On another note, when we thought about her passing, we thought about all of our favorite Black celebrities that have donned a Vivienne Westwood creation over the years. She has dressed everyone from Beyoncé to SZA to Doja Cat and Gabrielle Union.

To shine a light on some of these fashion moments, we’ve rounded up our favorite Vivienne Westwood looks that made our hearts race. Fly high Dame Vivienne Westwood.

Doja Cat opted for this rather colorful number while attending the black carpet for the 2020 American Music Awards, where she won the Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist and New Artist of the Year awards. The dress had a sleek one-shoulder design constructed out of sheer tulle, a light brown corset that gave the nude effect, and a flouncy skirt that featured mesh paneling and a beautiful purple floral print.

When it comes to her stage costumes, Beyoncé goes all out and puts on her chicest looks. One of her outfits during the On The Run II Tour, taking place in 2018, showcased a shimmy silver Vivienne Westwood ensemble comprised of a silver sequin jumpsuit with a corseted bodice and an off-the-shoulder design. The garment also had a metallic train that floated behind her as she moved about the stage.

Gabrielle Union sashayed in a beautiful black sleeveless gown by Westwood for the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. The dress had decadent draping on the bodice with a plunging neckline. The gown also had a thigh-high slit that edged up the moment. (Also, Union popped on a Westwood pearl choker for another layer of sophistication.)

Tracee Ellis Ross has certainly become a fashion girl, so it’s not a shock that she sported Vivienne Westwood in the past. Back in 2015, Ross wore a yellow off-the-shoulder dress accented with a plunging neckline, incorporating a bold and colorful eye-catching print.

Fashion for SZA is mostly about being flashy yet edgy. Her 2022 Met Gala ensemble didn’t stray away from this reputation. The “I Hate U” singer wore a hot pink Moire print gown that had a sharp thigh-high slit and plunging, a sleeveless design showcasing dramatic (and fabulous) draping. She paired it with black latex opera gloves, black thigh-high boots, and a large black hat that completed her bright and bold appearance.

For the latest Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premiere, Lupita Nyong’o decided to dip herself in a gold one-shoulder moment completed with a thigh-high slit. It had exquisite draping and perfect gathering for added dimension and depth.
